There was a table of 7 wonderful ladies having a great deal of fun, until the football questions in the Trivia game. What do we know about football? Food and Wine Night is a regular feature at the Wynnum Manly Leagues Club, and this was the first time I have attended. A wonderful night - food was fabulous, the wine flowed, but luckily I had to get up early the next day so I did not imbibe as much as perhaps otherwise.

A great night. Book me in for the next one - in about 3 months time!

Brisbane Kite Festival

The Brisbane Kite Festival will be held from 10 am next Sunday October 9th October at Murarrie Recreation Ground, 1182 Wynnum Road, Cannon Hill.

The Rotary Clubs of Port of Brisbane, Carindale, Moreton Bay and Balmoral will use the proceeds for local and international community projects.

Wynnum Spring Festival

The Wynnum Spring Festival is on this coming weekend - October 7th - 9th, at Bandstand Park, on the foreshore between Wynnum and Manly. Last year the weather washed it out, but it has been a tradition in the area for many years - and is in its 89th year.

Active Outdoor Expo

On Saturday October 1st, the foreshore at Manly was alive with activity promoting healthy active outdoor pursuits. There were tents dotted around the grass with promotion of a wide range of activities.

There were plenty of activties to explore and gain further information, as well as a number of displays including stunt bike riding, trampoline, kayaking, rock climbing, and Dragon Boat Racing.

Up Late in Wynnum

Last Thursday evening Bay Tce, Edith St, and Florence Streets were busy - with Wynnum Up Late starting at 5 pm.

This is an initiative of some of the traders in Wynnum - and it looks like it is a huge success. Not all stores were open, but some were very busy with visitors and customers.

Manly Farmer's Markets

There is always a market at Manly on Sundays, but the BIG market is Jan Power's Manly Markets on the 3rd Saturday of each month.

The atmosphere at the Farmer's Market is great with musicians, crowds, lots of different products to test or buy. You could spend hours there.

Want to have a stall there? The best thing to do would be contact Jan Power's office, so best go to the website.

The Moat at Fort Lytton

This could be a scene from way out in the bush, but it is in fact only feet from the Caltex Oil Refinery beside Fort Lytton, at the mouth of the Brisbane River.

According to the brochure about the Heritage Parks of Moreton Bay, including Fort Lytton National Park, the area is the site of remnants of a colonial coastal fortress and quarantine station.

It is near the southern side of the mouth of the Brisbane River, just 18 kms downstream from the city.

The site "played an important strategic role in guarding against attacks from enemy ships and preventing diseases spreading from a thriving population."

The Park is open each Sunday, and on the first Sunday of each month, there is a reenactment and some of the cannons are fired.

It is an interesting place along with the Museum, and a pleasant picnic area too, being right on the river.

Seen Cafe - Be Seen there.

Like good coffee? This place is a little hidden, but is a "hidden gem" with great coffee and food. Seen Cafe is at 150 Bay Tce, Wynnum.

On Wednesday mornings, proprietor (and author!) Jeanette Marie likes to welcome new arrivals to the Wynnum area, so if you are "new" or are seeking new friendships, call in for a cuppa and a chat.

You will see the coffee bags with the strange little characters on them, at the entrace to the Cafe between Clara and Edith Streets, Wynnum.

Fort Lytton

This is an historical place that is seldom mentioned, though no doubt hundreds of people visit when it is open on Sundays, when volunteers take visitors on a guided tour of the fort.

To find out more about the Fort and their visiting hours go to their website and see for yourself. Unfortunately there is no public transport to the Fort, but it is a pleasant drive and if you have time before or after your visit, you might venture down to the Port of Brisbane.

Unfortunately the Visitors Centre at the Port is only open from Monday to Friday from 9 am to 4 pm, and that is well worth a visit, but sadly on the day the Fort is open, the Visitors centre is closed. perhaps to the visitors centre and see what is going on there. There are major re -eneactment events annually at Easter, and that is always a most interesting event.

Halloween at Manly

Halloween has become a big event in Manly, and last night was probably the most successful of the Halloween events. Thousands of people lined Cambridge Parade for the parade which started at 6.10 pm. Many spectators were dressed in costume, and the array of vehicles, and characters that drove, walked or marched was impressive.

It took around 30 minutes to pass and at the end the streets and footbaths around Manly were busy. Some folk were still coming, and others were trying to get home through the throngs of people.

Wynnum Wading Pool

With the warmer weather, the Wynnum Wading Pool has been very busy!

This is the venue for an interesting collection of motorised miniature boats, and they make a grand sight plying the waters of the Wading Pool.

But the children have found the cool waters of the pool, a great place to play on the hot days.

With the picnic area, tables and seats surrounding the area, and being adjacent to the water play area, and a number of restaurants/cafe's nearby, it is a great place to take the children.

They can ride their bikes or scooters, play in the sand on Pandanus Beach, or walk on the path that travels along the edge of the water.

Adventures continue

Although they are not all mine. I will update though, as it does give some idea of the topsy turvy life I can lead I guess.

I've had two Skype conversations today - one with my friend who is now in Korea, finding out how complicated life can be there. I was of course supposed to be there last week, and my students met, as they do from time to time, and were hoping I would be there with them, but as the plans changed, that was not to be. My friend then was going to meet with them, but that didn't happen either. She has spent some time in Jeonju, and was headed to CheonAn today.

The accomodation which was supposed to be organised for her (or me) a week or so ago, is still not ready. There's a mattress to buy, and a desk, and so on. I don't know if she will stay there tonight - it does sound a bit "iffy" as we would say.

From China I was in touch with a student from the university in Shaoxing - we always talk about me going back there. She is a working girl now, but still wants to show me around her home town which is not far from Hangzhou. I am looking forward to seeing her and her family.

I was reading a website which is a network of teachers in China and recognised the name of someone who was in our writing group. She went to China some months ago, but went through an agent. It turns out this guy is a rogue and he had her booked into doing so much extra work. She had not got her Z visa before she went to China, so was rather restricted in what she could do too. However, she has been able to negotiate a better plan but still is not happy. She was initially required to mark 8000 assignments in one year! How would that be!!!

Anyway I have heard from her and she is OK, but not sure of her next move - back to Australia or something else in China.

Then I received a message from someone who had discussed with me a program in north China, and teaching nurses English so that they could come to Australia and train/work here. The project fell through though. She is back in Australia - but needs to update her quals - things have changed in the few years she has been out of the country. So she is betwixt and between.

Meanwhile I have been working on lesson plans to teach at a college in Brisbane tomorrow. I was due to go and sit in on a lesson, but the teacher has called in sick, so I got a call to delay my arrival tomorrow. I've found it somewhat challenging to do a lesson plan - with so many unknowns. I don't know the students, am not familiar with the English program they are doing, and will be "winging it" as they say.

Then came the snakes!!! MM has been working on the front garden - a long overdue project that is all but complete today. Planter boxes have been built and are in situ, and he was piling the dirt from a pile that has been sitting on the front lawn for several years. Growing with each mowing as the clippings were thrown onto it. Seems Mrs Snake chose this place for her nest and he came across a dozen or so baby snakes. They were around a foot long and scurried all over the place as he spaded the dirt into the new planter boxes.

Meanwhile, in preparation for the meeting of the Society of Women Writers tomorrow (yes, I was going to fit that in before going to the College), where we have to swap one of our favourite books after writing about 50 words about it. Only 50? OK.

The Book I have chosen is one that I have bought (and given away) on many occasions. It is a book called "Random Acts of Kindness" which set me on a course with the Kindness Foundation in Australia. I confess I have lost touch with the organisation, after being their quite active Queensland represtentative. A long time ago I think. Maybe 10 years ago.

In any case, I found their website and saw that the founder of the Australian Kindness Movement has been ill. I have sent a message giving him my best wishes for a speedy recovery. I've also learned that it is Kindness Week in November - in fact Australian Kindness day is November 5th.

Wynnum Jetty

It is a small jetty as jetties go, and you'll never see a boat tied up at it, but it is a wonder place for a stroll.

Almost every day you'll find a "procession" of walkers as they stroll out to the end of the jetty perhaps seeking to catch a glimpse of any dolphins who swim around the bay.

On a clear day you can see right out to North Stradbroke Island, and see many of the boats that ply the waters of Moreton Bay.

Along the jetty are works of art, which explain something of the aboriginal fishing experiences in the Bay.

Dining at the Bay

There are several good eating places overlooking the Manly Harbour and last week I had the pleasure of dining at Wilson's Boathouse which overlooks the entrance to the harbour. It was a brilliant day - fabulous blue skies, and being a Wednesday it was a good opportunity to see the yachts of WAGS going out. (WAGS means Wednesday afternoon Gone Sailing) and those folk who don't work, or can take time off from work, go out for a sail on Wednesday afternoons. The meal at Wilson's was fabulous, and so was the view! So good! Have a look at their website - Wilson's Boathouse. They also have a restaurant at Portside, Hamilton on the Brisbane River.

The Wynnum Manly Jazz Festival on Sept 6th

Put the date in your diary - the annual Wynnum Manly Jazz Festival will be held on Sunday September 6th, at Bandstand Park, Wynnum, commencing at 11 am.

The program includes The Andrew Sisters Tribute Band, Iona College Jazz Bands 1 and 2,Colin Jones' Tyburn Swingers, and Glad Graveson will sing between bands.

Food and drinks will be on sale.

Picnic Spots around Wynnum Manly

With the high cost of petrol and shrinking family budgets, travelling to distant places for a picnic seems not such a good idea. But that's no reason to stay at home.

All the family can enjoy a simple picnic or similar outing at one of the many parks and picnic grounds that abound in the southern Bayside region, and a new site will give information for locals and visitors who would like to see spots in the area.

The most obvious place, weather permitting, is the Esplanade which stretches from Wynnum North to Lota, where there are many picnic spots.

Rivergate

To the east of the Gateway Bridge which spans the Brisbane River is the marina called Rivergate. It is promoted as a "Super Yacht Marina" and is planning to become one of Australia's leading superyacht bases.

It is well positioned on the east coast of Australia, and with a frontage on the river, approximately 6 nautical miles from the river mouth.

Rivergate has access to quite a number of marine services - details of many can be found on their website.

Future plans include a retail and restaurant precinct.

Picnic Spots

There are many great spots to picnic around the Wynnum Manly region, but one of my favourites is on the Brisbane River, just a short drive from Wynnum. Actually there are several parks around the area but the biggest is Colmslie Beach Reserve.

This reserve is high over the river, but beach access is via healthy wooden stairs that go down to a small boardwalk and the beach. Many people choose to fish the Brisbane River from here, but I've not seen any catches. In the park itself is a children's playground, plenty of shade trees, and a number of shelters with table and seats, and electric barbecues. There's plenty of parking too. It is a great place for all the family - and the river traffic here is always fascinating. Small boats ply the river and on weekends you might be lucky enough to see a big cruise liner make its way from Portside along the river and out on another cruise. Some of the liners are quite spectacular. Toilet facilities are available too.

Chambers of Commerce

There are two very active Chambers of Commerce in the region - strange for a relatively small community, but they are different. The Manly Chamber focuses on tourism, especially events in the Manly area, from which of course the whole region generally benefits. The Wynnum and Districts Chamber has a wider focus - generally working with all business in the region. One of their popular events is the bimonthly Mix and Mingle, which is held at Shangri La Gardens. This is a grand networking event enjoyed by members and their guests.

Wynnum Wading Pool

The Wynnum Wading Pool was created during the great Depression in the 1930's, and last year was re opened after a redevelopment.

The Pool is adjacent to cafe's on the Esplanade, and is a great picnic spot with plenty of seating, and picnic areas. You can buy your food and drinks or bring them for a great picnic in this parkland.

If you like walking or cycling, there are quality paths to the north and to the south of the bay - with interesting places to stop and explore along the way.

The pool is a great place to cool off and at one end is a slippery slide that the children will enjoy. Adjacent are change rooms and toilet facilities, and the Wynnum Jetty stretches out into the Bay. It is a pleasant walk to the end of the jetty and back.

Sailing on Moreton Bay

Moreton Bay is glorious and there are many ways to go boating on the Bay and see for yourself the wonders on our doorstep here. If you have your own boat - you are fortunate, but for those who do not there are many options. One in particular which is a great day out is on the sailing ship South Passage. The home port of the South Passage is Manly, which is the base of Sail Training Association of Queensland. The South Passage is available for day trips from time to time, so check the program here and book in. You will need to be at the William Gunn Jetty, Manly by 9.30 am, ready with comfortable clothes and shoes, sunscreen, hats, (togs if you want a swim), and a sense of adventure. Don't forget your food - as you must supply all your own refreshments for day trips. If you are interested in learning how to sail, or being involved in the organisation, or going on longer voyages, check out the website. Join the organisation and enjoy membership benefits. We went on one of the voyages on January 23rd 09 - and it was a great fun day out!

Pelicans at dawn

Along the foreshore from Wynnum North to Lota is a walkway right on the edge of the bay. In the early morning from before sunrise it is a magnet for walkers who enjoy their daily exercise in front of the magnicicent view of Moreton Bay.

From the north, and the south and places between, you can walk off into other paths, or streets, or if you are a cyclist, there are plenty of places to take your bicycle and explore further.

In the early morning the sun rises up from the horizon, and sometimes there is a gently breeze. Good for walking. Other times there can be a bit of a stronger wind, but at this time of the year (February) it is more likely to be peaceful.

Take your walking shoes, and a bottle of water, and a camera - and walk. Need some refreshments along the way? Easy. There are several coffee shops that will be open from early in the morning, so tuck some money into your bumbag!

Often you will see many pelicans around the Wynnum Creek area. There is a fish market, and the pelicans often enjoy a feed there. These huge clumsy birds spend a lot of time in this area, waiting for the food.

The Boardwalk

The Boardwalk meanders it's way through the mangroves at Wynnum North, giving walkers a wonderful experience right near the sea.

It is well away from traffic and human noises and the only sounds are the birds and sea life. Sometimes the little waves can be heard, but often it is quiet and at low tide there is little water on the sea floor. Sometimes there are noisy birds, strange clicking noises in the pools of water.

It is not easy to see the sky from along the boardwalk, but it is not uncommon to see pelicans flying overhead, along with sea eagles, seagulls and other birds.

It is a good idea not to walk here alone if you can - if you need help it is unlikely to be close by as often you will be the only person in the area.

Mangroves on the foreshore

Mangroves grow along the waterfront from Tingalpa Creek right along to the Brisbane River. Around Tingalpa Creek and Lota there is a forest of them. They form an important part of the ecology of the area but are not always popular, particularly with many who live close by.

The trees trap debris and it is often stinky. As well it is a haven for mosquitoes.

At Wynnum North there is a boardwalk through the mangroves, which is usually a pleasant walk despite the mosquitoes and the occasional odd odour from the area. It is a good idea to cover up and use some insect repellent, especially in summer, but it is a pleasant walk.

There are several approaches to the area, but a good walker can walk along the walking path right on the water's edge from anywhere along the foreshore and keep walking past the sports fields, up over a rise near the dog off leash park. There are several maps in shelters along the foreshore with information.

Wynnum Creek

It is hard to believe that once this Creek was the scene of a thriving fishing industry. Many years ago there was a huge fleet of fishing boats that worked out of the creek. It was over 100 years ago, when the creek had good water flow, and fish were plentiful in Moreton Bay. The catch as transported into Brisbane city via the railway.

Many things have changed. The boats are bigger and need more water under them. The creek is silted up badly, and there are few fish in the bay.

The creek often required dredging in those heady days of the lucrative fishing industry, but it is many years since it has been dredged and at low tide many of the boats sit on the muddy bottom.

Mostly recreational fishing is done from the creek, with many a weekend boaty taking their tinny or larger boat down to the creek from the northern side of the little waterway. There are still fish in Moreton Bay, but certainly constant professional and recreational fishing has depleted the stocks.

Anglers trying their luck from the jetties or waterfront around the Bay can still catch something, but many go home empty handed.

What is the future for Wynnum Creek? Should it be dredged and opened up?

Pelicans

Around Wynnum Creek, where it flows into the Bay, there are quite a few pelicans. Of course their main attraction is the fish from the Fish Shop adjacent to the creek. This is where the commercial fishermen bring their catch, and this is where I understand the pelicans are provided with fish pieces as the fish are sorted or prepared.

They are fascinating birds, and each time I see them I remember the words "his beak can hold more than his belly can" as they have an amazing beak which is floppy on the underside of the beak and can expand and hold quite a large fish.

They glide gracefully in the sky, and usually do an awkward landing, and on the sand or mudflats they walk with a slight swagger.

They tend to congregate in groups along the mudflats, and often squabble amongst themselves.

In mouth of the Wynnum Creek, often they are found sitting on one of the large poles that the bigger boats are tied up to, and they seem to rest quite comfortably on the poles.

Perhaps someone should train them to receive food from the hand, could be a good tourist attraction.

Art in Florence

The next Art in Florence will be held on Saturday September 6th from 8 am in Florence Street Wynnum. Artists are invited to display their works for sale on the school fence. This event started in December 2007, and despite some issues with wet weather, it is a popular event.

Jan Power's Farmers Markets at Manly

Sunday Markets have been at Manly for years - but there's a new face in town. Jan Power's famous Farmers Markets have arrived in Manly - much to the joy of the many folk who have attended her markets at other venues around Brisbane.

While not all local traders are happy, it appears that the overwhelming majorty of people want the markets to continue. Many folk do travel to the markets at other venues - particularly those at the Powerhouse at New Farm, and are thrilled that they don't have to go so far, especially with the high price of petrol these days.

One of the drawcards is the fresh produce (fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, bread) and people do like to support the farmers, and meet those who grow the fruit and vegetables. Other food items such as olives, pate, jams, spreads, herbs, spices - many of which are not easily accessable locally are featured in the many stalls.

There is a variety of other quality items as well, and all in all the markets at Manly on the one Saturday a month that these particular markets take up their place near the Manly Pool, are very popular.

Certainly many people are local folk, but many are from suburbs some distance away, and one would hope that they spend a little time looking to see what other shopping is available in the Manly and Wynnum areas.

The markets are on a "trial basis" at the moment, while negotiations continue with the Brisbane City Council. Many of the locals and visitors are hoping that these markets, which will be on the third Saturday of each month, will become a regular feature.

The next Farmer's Markets will be held on September 20th.

CBD Draft Plan

There's been a lot of talk, and we know there has been consultation with various groups with interst in the area, but at long last the draft Wynnum Manly Neighbourhood Plan has been released.

Business owners and residents in and around the Wynnum CBD will be keen to see the plans to develop Wynnum and surrounding areas. We know it is needed - for some reason Wynnum seems to have been left behind and is in urgent need of a revamp.

I'm interested that the grounds of the Wynnum Central School are listed as a possible green space for Wynnum.

There is a lot of work to do, and probably a lot of inconvenience before the Wynnum CBD is "up to scratch" and that business in the area improves so that the small business owners who have been loyal to Wynnum despite the difficulties in recent times, wil flourish.

We need to read the 17 page report and respond - let the Brisbane City Council know what the locals see as important.

Fishing at Wynnum

Wynnum Creek at high tide (February 5th, 08)

It's funny - I'm only a short drive from the waterfront, I love fishing, but in 15 years I think I've only tried to fish from the "front" as the esplanade is often called, just once.

Yesterday I drove into the car park beside Wynnum Creek to get a photo. The sky was moody and threatened rain, and because of the heavy rain that we have had the bay is full of debris washed out of the creeks and rivers, and it was a high tide. Good for fishing.

There was a man fishing - standing under the cover of the fishing facility near the creek - where the fishermen pull in their boats, and clean and gut any of the day's spoils. He was well protected if it would rain. He's a regular and he and his mates, he told me, often catch a good feed from this spot. On the high tide - an hour before the top of the tide, and an hour afterwards the fish bite.

He was quite an interesting fellow and we chatted for a while as I took some photos.

Boat Ramps around Wynnum Manly

This is one of the many quality boat ramps around the Wynnum Manly area to cater for the many fisher folk and boaties that use Moreton Bay. There is one towards Fisherman Island, this one at the Wynnum Creek, several for small boats along the esplanade and several at Manly where the bigger boats are launched. As well there is one further down at Lota - but you'll need to watch the tides here as at low tide it can present some challenges!

As well there are many little shops that provide bait, or accessories for fisher folk and boaties of all kinds. With several large and popular yachting and boat clubs with their bases around the Manly Harbour it is a great place for those who like to venture out - especially as Moreton Bay is a relatively safe waterway, being protected by some large islands.

Dawn at Wynnum

All along the waterfront from Wynnum North to Lota in the south is a wonderful pathway which is a very busy place most fine mornings as the energetic strut their stuff and walk to enjoy the scenery.

This morning I joined them, and as I usually do, took my camera. The sun was peeping through some amazing cloud formations and the water was as its calm best at that time of day.

It was going to be a hot steamy day - and there was no breeze. I could sit on a seat (if I had the time) and just take in the view............................ but there are things to do.

Greenspace in Wynnum

There is some discussion regarding a proposal to close part of Edith Street (between Bay Terrace and Akonna Tce) to create a greenspace, as there is no other "green" area near the Wynnum CBD.

However, there is another proposal being considered - that the school grounds of Wynnum Central School be the green space for the Wynnum CBD. As part of the Schools of Tomorrow plan by the State Education Department, it is thought that Wynnum Central School may be closed due to lack of students, and the possibility that other nearby schools will be upgraded to provide better education facilities for primary school students.

As well as using the school grounds to provide a greenspace, there is a proposal that the school buildings - some of which are heritage listed, to provide the venue for an Arts College/Precinct.

An art gallery? Studio for musicians to record? Drama and art classes?

Art in Florence

Weather permitting, local artists will display their work on the fence of Wynnum Central State School next Saturday, February 2nd from 8.30 am. This event is staged on the first Saturday of each month, with local artists showing their work. You are invited to purchase (haggle with the artist first, or discuss the art work with him/her), and join in the fun of this event.

Chaos on the Railway line.

Yesterday morning there was a problem with the overhead powerlines associationed with the trains, and all trains between Cleveland and the city were disrupted all day. What chaos! Train travellers were transported by bus from stations beyond Murarrie, to Murarrie to catch the train from that station. There was quite a deal of confusion.

Late in the day there was also a gas leak emergency situation at Fortitude Valley and the Brunswick St Station was closed too. So I'm sure there are a few QR people trying to get over the dramas today.

It is always good to know how quickly the system operates to provide alternate transport so quickly. Of course many folk who heard about it early chose to take their cars to the city and there was excessive traffic on the roads too.

It would be nice if we could get a ferry into the city from somewhere in this neighbourhood!

More sunshine

The sun is out! But there is still rain about - and plenty of showers. The holiday makers though can get out and about, even if they have to keep one eye on the weather.

The heavy rains have pushed a lot of debris out of the creeks and there is much debris floating on the sea and being washed up on the beaches. The Gold Coast beaches are badly affected but no major problem locally.

Hopefully the yachting races can proceed without any problems, other than catching up for lost time.

The markets on Sunday were interesting. Few of the stall holders appeared - apparently they tend to have January off and return in February. But because the weather was better in the morning it seemed that everyone was walking along the Esplanade.

So many parents were glad to get the children out to run off their spare energies after being cooped up for so long!!

Marketers watched the weather as every now and then a dark patch of clouds would appear but until 1.30 pm disappeared without dropping any rain on the area. But at that time great black clouds rolled accross the sky and it was obvious that heavy rain was going to fall.

So for many it was a quick retreat - and sure enough there was nearly an hour of very heavy rain. Wonderful soaking rain again.

But the sun was out again the next day!

What lousy weather.

The weather has been "bad" for over a week now. A huge low developed off Fraser Island, north of here, which resulted in huge seas which necessitated the evacuation of many campers on the island, and the closing of beaches on the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast.

As well we have endured windy conditions, and frequent rain showers. Not a lot of rain - not the heavy rains that we were familiar with at this time of the year in the past. Enough to dampen spirits and cancel outdoor activities.

Usually summer time brings many picknickers along the Wynnum Manly foreshore, and this time of the year there are a number of yachting regattas out of Manly - but the weather has played havoc with all these plans. It has not been safe for yachting, and who wants to have a picnic in the rain.

As well the food shops along the foreshore have suffered - as the weather drives away their noral clientele.

Still not a lot of rain has fallen, and only slight improvements have been made to our water catchments.

Another low - a potential cyclone is around. We will have to wait and see.

Spirit of Koomooloo

Last year in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, local sailor Mike Freebairn was shattered when his yacht Koomooloo was swamped by a big wave and lost. Thankfully Mike and crew were all saved but his dreams were somewhat shattered.

As this is being written he is sailing his new yacht "The Spirit of Koomooloo" in the inconic yacht race, and is doing well, despite being well behind the leaders of the big race.

We are proud of Mike and his achievements, and wish him well as he races towards the finish line in "Spirit of Koomooloo"

Carols by the Bay

Each Christmas there is community Carols by the Bay at George Clayton Park. Tbe bandstand at the park is the venue for a number of events during the year. The Carols are organised by the Spring Festival Committee - which continues to raise funds for the Festival throughout the year.

This park is on the waterfront between Wynnum and Manly. There are great lawned open spaces which are great for ball games, "back yard cricket" etc. There is a toilet block, several BBQ areas with plenty of shade, and children's playground. It it a very popular place during holidays and especially at weekends.

One popular spot is the red lighthouse. Not only do children love to climb to the top but it is a great meeting place. "Meet you at the park at the red lighthouse" you'll hear.

Wading Pool at Wynnum

During the great Depression in the early 1900's one of the major projects to get employment and income for desperate families, the government funded the construction of the Wynnum Wading Pool, which has been a popular place for children to play in the water especially during our hot summers.

As part of the $12 million upgrade of the Wynnum Manly foreshore the Wading Pool is being renovated, and water will be drawn in from the bay - but from some distance away from the shore, to keep the water cleaner.

Sadly the pool will not be ready until some time in 2008 - which has upset the locals and holiday makers that enjoy the bay area.

Sea Turtle has gone

I went for a drive along the waterfront this morning to see if the turtle was still there. There was no sign of it. I would only hope that it was rescued, or perhaps was able to swim to safetly with the high tide last night.

It is not common to see these creatures on the beach here - though many do live in the bay.

At this time of year the female turtle will nest, but usually it is further north - on some of the huge sand islands, or beaches around Bundaberg.

I hope the turtle is OK.

Sea Turtle stranded

Yesterday while driving with a friend along the esplanade, we noticed people stopping and looking at something in the sea. It was a stranded sea turtle.

There are many of these turtles in Moreton Bay and often they are victims of accidents with boats, or more correctly, the propellers of boats, but this one did not seem to be the victim of such accident.

It was certainly stranded as the tide receded. It was alive - and occasionally would lift it's head out of the water and take a breath.

Various sea rescue organisations were notified - but as it was late on a Friday afternoon, it was difficult to get someone to attend.

The first of the monthly Art in Florence events was held on Saturday November 3rd. You can find more information and photos at Art in Wynnum.

It was advertised as continuing until 4.30 pm - but it seems that 1 pm will be the closing time, as nearly all artists had cleared away by then.

Thirty artists displayed their work, and many sold items. Two items over $300 were sold! On Monday a cheque for $162 will be handed over to the Wynnum Central School.

The Visual Arts committee will work on further attractions for the next event on December 1st.

Art on Florence

I don't have a photo - YET! Tomorrow, November 3rd is the first of a new venture for the Wynnum Manly Arts Council Visual Arts Group which will see a number of artists placing their work on the fence of the Wynnum Central State School for all to see and hopefully purchase.

This is similar to several places in the world, but one I have been to and have fond memories of is the fences of St Stephen's Green in Dublin, Ireland. There is much history in Dublin, and this amazing park is the place for city workers to go for their breaks.

The surrounding fences are the hanging space for art works of many artists who put their paintings on the fences on a Friday and watch as the crowds walk past and comment, and in many cases purchase.

It is a very vibrant scene - with horses and carts clipclopping along the road with tourists, the thousands of people who spill out of the shops and offices for their lunch break, and the many tourists and residents who come to see the spectacle of the art works on sale.

I know the population in Wynnum is nothing like that in Dublin, but I hope they come out in droves to see what talented artists we have locally and support this event. If you miss it this month, we hope for a successful repeat on December 1st. It is planned to be held on the first Saturday of each month.

Wynnum Creek

Once upon a time the Wynnum Creek was apparently a hive of industrial commercial fishermen. These days there are a few that call this part of the world home, but certainly there is not as much activity as in the past.

Part of the problem is that the creek is now quite shallow - it always got silted up, but in the past there was more effort to clear out the silt.

The creek on one side has a good launching spot for smaller boats, and recreational fishermen use it all the time. There are always boats coming and going. And the lucky fishermen or women who manage to catch a fish or two in the bay have a neat little spot to scale, and clean their fish.

There are some 20 or 30 beautiful pelicans that live around this area, and know that when the fishermen come to clean their fish. They love the scraps.

Over the Wynnum Creek is a very old bridge - the Fox Street Bridge which is very much part of local history. And on Fox Street is an Indian restaurant, and a hotel. I think it is called Wynnum Point Hotel these days, but has had a series of names recently.

Opposite the hotel is Greene Park, named after one of the local families of our history, and from Fox Street is the entrance to the famous Fish Shop - a great place for fresh seafood, and of course fish and chips.

Wrecked

This damaged boat first appeared just outside the channel at Manly. It appears that someone may have stolen it, stripped it and deserted it. For some weeks it sat as quite a curiousity near Manly Harbour, but mysteriously it has now turned up further north near Wynnum Creek.

It sits like a strange skeleton of a boat, stuck in the mud and at high tide you can walk right up to it if you don't mind the deep sticky mud.

No one has claimed it - no boat has been reported missing, so there it sits deserted. There's nothing of value left.

Charlie Chaplin at the Jazz Festival?

This character roamed around in amongst the spectators at the Wynnum Jazz Festival.

He's a fabulous Charlie look alike and plays the role fantastically. He never speaks but entertains the children with a range of antics.He wears oversize boots and walks just the way I remember from the old movies. He carries a cane which he uses for all sorts of tricks.

The Jazz was fabulous - a balmy day on the foreshore.

I had to call into Wynnum central this morning to go to the ATM - and afterwards I drove down to the waterfront. It is the second day of spring, and the weather is just fantastic. A great day to spend time with the family on one of the many parks along the foreshore.

Today with perfect weather it was busy from early in the morning. The photo does not do justice to the numbers that were there.

All along the waterfront it was cars lined up and up the side streets. A few sunburns too I guess by the end of the day.

Fathers Day and Jazz

Each year on the foreshore between Wynnum and Manly is the Jazz Festival. As today (September 2nd) is Father's Day - the festival is on.

Take a chair, a hat, cold drink and snacks and sit down for some fabulous entertainment. If you can't make it this year - remember it for 2008. It is sure to be on!

Today we are celebrating the music of Benny Goodman - so it should be great!

The Ambulance Museum

There are at least two Ambulance Museums in Queensland, and one is in Wynnum on Tingal Road, on the corner of Cedar St.

So many folk pass it on a daily basis and have no idea what wonders lie within. There is a Local Ambulance Committee of volunteers that maintain the Museum and open it on special occasions but generally it is closed and it's treasurers hidden within.

The building was opened in 1926, and only a few years ago was offically closed, when the Ambulance station was moved ot the grounds of the Wynnum Hospital on Whites Road. In fact it is still used for training purposes (there's a meeting room and office upstairs), and two of the old ambulances are housed at the back of the building. One or two of them will be seen in the next Spring Festival which is in October.

Fires!

We have some wonderful bushland parks around the Wynnum Manly area - and sadly some of it has been burned in recent weeks.

One area between Manly Road and Wynnum Road caused lots of problems last weekend and early in the week - it did go right up close to buildings but all were saved due to the diligence of our firies.

I have no idea how the fire started - but it looks a little suspicious!

Why do folk get excited about setting fires? So dangerous. So much damage!

I guess it reminds us as summer approaches though to have some sort of fire plan - clear the gutters of debris, have a fire plan at home, etc.

When we get rain the bushland will rejuvenate!

Foreshore Development

For many many months there has been redevelopment along the whole foreshore from near Wynnum Creek to the north, and Manly to the south. There is still more work to do, but a new BBQ area is finished near Wynnum Creek, and this weekend some of the work is finished at Manly - enough that the Brisbane Lord Mayor will be visiting tomorrow to open it.

The foreshore is always very popular during weekends, especially during summer when the cool breezes from the bay keep everyone a bit cooler. The views are spectacular and the fish and chipperies along the waterfront do good business as families gather under the various shelters to party and enjoy all that there is to offer.

No doubt the new facilities will be much used during the coming hot months. I shall visit with camera in hand tomorow to get some photos to post in the next day or so.

Port of Brisbane - Visitors Centre

To the north of Wynnum is the burgeoning Port of Brisbane area. The port itself is built on reclaimed land at the mouth of the Brisbane River, and extends out into Moreton Bay. Due to its close proximity to Asia it is gaining much popularity as the place for imported goods to be delivered.

There is a Visitors Centre which is open to the public. There are two restaurants and an area with displays about the Port of Brisbane. Both restaurants overlook the lake on which hundreds of birds call home, and it is always fascinating to dine while watching the antics of black swans, ducks, moorhens, sea gulls and other birds.

There are regular tours from the Visitors Centre around the Port precinct to see the amazing growth and development of the area.

There is also a huge area dedicated to birds - in particular the thousands of migratory birds that fly in from as far north as Siberia for our summer.

Wednesday Afternoon Gone Sailing - WAGS

It seems to be tradition around these parts. Each Wednesday sailors go out in their yachts from the Royal Queensland Yacht Club at Manly, and they are usually looking for crew. So, if you would like to try your hand at sailing, make your way to the yacht club by midday on a Wednesday.

Not everyone can get the Wednesday afternoon off from work, so there's plenty of spots for crew - experienced or novices.

On this occasion there was little wind - but the vision was spectacular. The white sails sitting out on the blue sea under the blue almost cloudless sky was a perfect photo opportunity.

Mudflats

It is not always a "pretty" sight - the mudflats at low tide. I find them fascinating and each day it is different.

At low tide there are often worm gatherers hunting for worms for the fishermen. They wade out throught the mudflats wearing long rubber boots, carrying a garden fork, and a bucket. They must obey some strict rules about turning the sods to find the worms, and returning the sod to the area they took it from.

These worms are highly prized by fishermen - so fetch a good price.

When the tide comes it, and goes out again, there should be little sign that the wormers have been although they know not to harvest from the same area constantly.

Mangroves

Along the foreshore and the creeks in the Wynnum Manly area many mangroves grow. They are an important part of the ecology here.

At Wynnum North there is a wonderful walk through the mangrove forests - including a timber boardwalk. It is a good idea to walk with company on this walks, but a walk right along the foreshore from Wynnum North to Lota will bring you face to face with many mangrove trees.

The Foreshore Redevelopment Continues

The Lord Mayor of Brisbane's plans for the Wynnum Manly Foreshore are proceeding and the whole area looks like a construction zone. At the Manly end the huge development is only weeks away from completion. Already there are new trees and a new roadway into Trafalgar Street. One can get a picture of the what it is likely to be.

The Manly Wading pool is being redeveloped - and when it is re-opened, the water will be filtered, and quite a lot cleaner than it is now. There will be more trees and more shelters.

Later in the year it will be opened so we are hoping that most of us will be happy with the end result.

Anzac Day Celebrations at Wynnum

It always surprises me how many people attend the Dawn Anzac Day services. There were thousands in the city, and towns and suburbs all around the country would have had a good attendance. Actually it increases every year.

Ceremonies start at 4.28 am. That was the very time that the forces landed on Gallipoli beaches all those years ago. The weather was most pleasant this year - I didn't need a jacket. The ceremony was held at the cenotaph in the grounds of the Wynnum Services Club.

Later on the march wended it's way through the suburb for yet another ceremony at the cenotaph.

The World War I Memorial at Richard Russell Park, Manly

It was 92 years ago that Australian soldiers landed at Gallipoli, and so many of them were killed in action on the beaches and in the hills behind the beaches in a bloody battle that will not be forgotten by Australians.

Each year, on April 25th we remember the soldiers in all wars that lost their lives while fighting for peace.

Each year it seems that more and more young people are learning about the history of Gallipoli and making there way to the many events around the country.

It is an early morning wake up - as one of the features of Anzac Day is the Dawn Service. In the Wynnum Manly area there are two services. One at Richard Russell Park, Manly starting at 3.45 am, and the other at the Cenotaph, near the Wynnum RSL Club.

As the sun comes up, it is quite moving to see hundreds of people standing heads bowed during the ceremony as we remember.

The Honorable John Howard, Prime Minister of Australia visited Manly today to open a library at Moreton Bay Boys College, and later dined at Wilson's at Manly.

Whilst this is not the first time he has visited the region, it was probably the first time he had seen Manly Harbour so close. The weather was divine, there was no wind, and the view of the harbour was spectacular as was the meal at Wilsons.

Wynnum Ambulance Museum

The Old Ambulance station on the corner of Tingal Rd and Cedar Street Wynnum is still used the the Queensland Ambulance Service. There are some administrative offices upstairs, but downstairs there is a unique museum. It is not open to the public on a regular basis, but can be opened by special appointment or group tour.

It is remarkable in that the museum houses the most extra ordinary memorabilia relating to the ambulance service in Queensland, and in Wynnum in particular. This building was opened as a working Ambulance Station in 1920.

They also house some old ambulance vehicles, and much in the way of archival material.

Anyone with an interest in health, emergency first aid, etc would find the whole exhibition most interesting. Also there is an auditiorium and for groups a wonderful presentation about the ambulance service in the area.

The History of Wynnum and Manly

Wynnum Manly Historical Society Inc.

It is believed that the first white people to visit the Wynnum Manly area were 3 cedar cutters who were blown off course on a voyage from Sydney in 1823.

The area was very popular with a number of aboriginal tribes that regularly visited or lived in the area for hundreds of years before the Europeans visited the area.

There are details of a rich history in the Wynnum Library History Room and in the local Wynnum Manly Historical Society Research rooms adjacent to the main entrance to the Wynnum Library. Members of the society are on hand to help with any research on Monday to Friday mornings from 10am to 12 noon.

New BBQ and picnic area at the mouth of Wynnum Creek provided by the Brisbane City Council.

In days gone by the Wynnum Creek was home to the commercial fishermen who live in the area and worked the seas of Moreton Bay. In the early days they used to take their catch by boat to the city markets via the Brisbane River, and later on in the early 20th century when the railway came to Wynnum the fish was transported by train.

The Wynnum Creek regularly silted up making it difficult for the fishing boats to make their way into the creek, and the creek was regularly dynamited to remove the sandy obstacles. These days very few commercial fishermen use the creek, but some do, as the Wynnum Fish Market is housed right near the mouth of the creek.

These days it is a "Fish and Chip" shop - and a popular one two. Whilst most folk drive in to purchase their feed, many people picnic in the many parks and facilities around the area.

It was also popular for the men folk who were sent to purchase the evening meal, to pop over to the hotel, which was then known as the Fishers' Hotel for a drop of beer while the fish was cooking.

There are quite a few wonderful fish and chipperies along the waterfront from Wynnum Creek in the north to Lota further south. Plenty of places to get a feed of Moreton Bay Fish. Check out the flathead or whiting from the bay.

I'm not knowledgeable about cars - in any way, and vintage and historic cars I can admire, but I don't know the details of their make, year etc. But I cam across a display of vintage cars on the Esplanade on Sunday.

Way, way back in the deep recesses of my memory - are visions of cars like this on the roads when I was a little girl. It wasn't a big display - it looked more like a social event for a car club.

Manly Harbour

I've not posted here for a long time. No excuse - I've been busy elsewhere. And not well. But all is well now, so I hope to post regularly. On Sunday I went for a walk along the Manly esplanade. There's still much chaos there as the redevelopment of the foreshore continues. It is a bit of a mess, but one can see the progress.

I went for a walk out on the William Gunn Jetty - and looked back to see the redevelopment of the Moreton Bay Trailer Boat Club. At long last the Club is building a huge deck so that diners and visitors can sit on the deck, in the fresh air, and watch the harbour. It is a spectacular view during the day, and at night a real treat.

The view above is similar to what one will see from the deck of the club when it is completed. Magic.

The Giant Puppets

The Spring Festival held on the second weekend of October started of with a lantern parade and parade and performance of giant puppets.
The puppets were made of rattan (to give shape) gaffer tape (to hold the rattan) covered with paper and painted.
My granddaughers and I worked on the giant fish on the first of the many working bees, but we were only able to attend that one.
However, I was certainly delighted that our handiwork (thanks to other volunteers) appeared in the parade, and that we were able to see the results of our handiwork.

Spring Festival

I think everyone involved in the Spring Festival should be congratulated. It was very successful and this year no winds to blow the tents away!

I am sorry I missed it but I'm pleased to see photos of the parade and especially the Giant Puppets which "performed" on the Friday night. One that was in the Wynnum Herald, and on the local website was one that my granddaughters and I had worked on. Pretty pleased about that. I must get the photo.

Low tide in Rose Bay

It's not the prettiest sight - but it is part of what Wynnum Manly now is. Each day, four a day we have a tidal change - there are two high tides each day, and two low tides each day.

The water level varies - some low tides are very low, and some high tides are very low, and early each year we have "king tides" where the water really pushes over the walkway and if there are storms at the same time, the roadway will flood. (Doesn't happen very often!)

At low tide it becomes mudflats. If one walks on it - you'll sink to your ankes in mud. Squelchy brown mud. The wormers go out along the flats wearing long rubber boots or waders, and carry a large fork and a bucket and life the clumps of sandy silt to find the worms that are so cherished by fisherfolk.

The Purple Carpet

The jacaranda tree flowers around October each year. They are a little early this year, perhaps due to the drought. Some trees have not survived - old trees, in Wynnum Road have just died due to the lack of water.

It is always a picture arriving by plane in Brisbane at this time of year as there are great puffs of lilac on the ground all over the place.

The flowering of the jacaranda coincides with exam time too - so in some ways it is a reminder that students all over the state are sitting for their exams right now.

Foreshore Upgrade

The redevelopment of the foreshore between Manly and Wynnum is underway. The cost of the project is $12.5 million dollars. The foreshore had a motley collection of parks, shelters and grassed areas, but it will all take on a new look when the redevelopment is completed.

A new road - currently still fenced off - has been created at Manly and more car parks are being created, eating a little into the park, but a necessity.

The locals are watching the development with interest.

Locals raise money for Africa

People gathered at local cafe Afrika Ink to present a cheque to Janet Duggan, mother of Donna, who lives in Arusha, Tanzania, and works to help local communities. Donna, a graduate of Moreton Bay College, lives with her husband and baby son, and together they run a Safari Business. Donna has a number of local projects - including providing fresh water, food and other support for the local school, Friends of Janet, Miranda Clark, Edward Kachab, and Lyn Hickey set out to raise $500 for a water tank, but in the end raised over $7000 and the cheque was presented at a wine and cheese function at Afrika Ink on Monday Sept 4th.

Sunday at Manly

The restaurants at Manly are pretty busy on Sundays as people enjoy breakfast at one of the many venues that are open. There are some right on the waterfront too, which adds a special ambience. After breakfast a stroll amongst the stalls in the markets is popular and many people sit at Norfolk Point watching small boats, and yachts come in and out of the harbour.

It is reputed to be one of the largest marinas in the southern hemisphere - it certainly is huge with several big boat clubs there.

The Manly Fish Cafe (pictured) is on the corner of the Esplanade and Cambridge Parade (the main shopping precinct), and the harbour shot is the view that diners will get from the Cafe.

Manly Markets

The Manly Markets are held each Sunday morning from very early until early afternoon. There are all sorts of stalls - photography, craft, art, plants, food, vegetables, and lots more. So many people have a late breakfast at one of the many restaurants that are open in the Manly precinct, and wander down to the Markets for a stroll, and to purchase some of the great goodies available. A walk along the waterfront is usually on the program too.

Bayside Women in Business

Every three months a group of business women (and those interested in business) meet for lunch. The function for August was held yesterday (22nd), and the guest speaker was Kay Danes, who had been imprisoned in Laos a number of years ago. Everyone was spell bound as they listened to her very emotional story.

William Gunn and the Kiosk

This photo was taken at the William Gunn Jetty in Manly overlooking the Marina. There is a wonderful kiosk on the jetty, idea for stopping for a coffee on a Sunday stroll. When it is a bit windy the clear plastic curtains are rolled down to give some shelter and still enable you to see the activity on the water. It's good for lunch, morning tea, and there is some car parking available behind the pool.

Down by the pool

The Wynnum Pool is a local icon, and last week received much more interest than is usual. During the previous night car thieves stole a car from a neighbouring suburb and then drover or pushed the car into the wading pool.

Batty

On Lytton Road there is a colony of fruit bats or flying foxes. Most people driving by don't see them, but thousands of them make their daytime roost in the mangroves near Dougboy Creek. It is hard to get a photo of them but two can be seen quite clearly hanging from one of the branches. When you drive by, you are likely to miss the sight, except on dusk. If you do stop your car (best to do on weekends when the traffic is quieter), you can hear the screetching and squabbling, and see them occasionally fly from one branch to another. The smell is something to hehold as well.
On dusk the sky is full - it is like a black cloud that ascends from the mangroves, does a few circuits and then they set out for the night in search of food. They love fruit trees and anyone with bananas or pawpaw will find traces of them the following day - bites taken out of the fruit, damaged beyond use, and their chewed remains on the ground below.
They also have trouble with their anal spincters - in fact they have none, so great trails of bat poo (guano) is left on houses, cars, paths etc.
For all that they are a protected species and for all the damage and inconvenience they cause, for the most part they are left alone.

Rivergate under the Bridge

Rivergate is a new entity in the region. Moreton Bay and the Brisbane River praovide wonderful opportunities for all boating communities, and this area is a popular visiting place for boaties from around the world.

The major marinas in the region complain that there the berths are often booked out, making it difficult for newcomers, so the Rivergate complex is great for the region. It is on the river mouth side of the great Gateway Bridge which spans the river and is the main arterial road from the south (Gold Coast etc) to the north (Sunshine Coast and northern Brisbane suburbs).

The bridge celebrated 20 years this year, and already it is being double due to the popularity of the bridge.

Wattle blooms

Along Lytton Road, Hemmant there are wattle bushes blooming. Great clumps of brilliant yellow blossoms at dotted alonside the road especially in the vicinity of the bridge over Doboy Creek. I think they are a bit early as it is something that I would expect later in the year, not in mid July, but I might be wrong.

On a clear day

On a clear day......... One of the "distractions" of the Wynnum Manly foreshore are the "mudflats" - once, many years ago, it was white sandy beaches but a number of changes to the area have resulted in the foreshore being silted up. Twice a day on high tide the mudflats are not visible. I guess it is just now part of the character of the area. This photo was taken around 10.30 am on Sunday July 9th, 2006. It shows the islands in the background, and the clear still waters of a breezless bay.

Pandanus

Only a few remain, but once upon a time the waterfront of Wynnum had a number of these pandanus trees which were very popular with the local indigenous people. Pandanus Beach, where these pandanus trees remain is undergoing some revegetation (hence the ugly plastic barriers!), and is one of the few white sandy beaches of the Wynnum area. It is believed that the local indigenous (aboriginals) called the pandanus winnam, from which the name Wynnum was derived.

Wellington Point

Wellington Point is visible from the foreshores of Wynnum and Manly. On a clear day at low tide you can see King Island - still attached by a spit of sand which becomes a popular walking trail before the tide changes and comes over the spit.
On one side of Wellington Point is the jetty and boat ramp - both popular. The jetty for those who want to fish and have no boat, and boat ramp is the setting of point for all sorts of small boats. In the distance is North Stradbroke Island and on any good day the white sails of yachts can be seen plying this very busy recreational waterway.

As in many communities we have a problem with graffiti vandals. Business with or adjacent to a blank wall are regularly subjected to attacks by these vandals. One simple way to discourage them is to pay an artist to create a feature wall. This wall is adjacent to the Punjab Restaurant in Manly. It is a beautiful piece of artwork.

Coastguard

Moreton Bay is a boaties paradise - until things go wrong, and as most boaties know there are all sorts of things that challenge even the most experienced boatie. Often it is a passing boat that will come to the rescue, but in many cases it is a call to the Coastguard to come and rescue the boat or the people. Especially when the weather and the sea turn nasty. There is a Coastguard station at the entrance to the Manly Harbour. This is just one of their craft.

Jazz Festival

Some 2000 people enjoyed the Wilson's Boathouse Jazz and Seafood Festival on the Sunday May 28th, 2006 - in the area on Norfolk Point surrounding the Boathouse Restaurant. The region is becoming a popular Jazz venue with two other Jazz events during the year - the Manly Rhythm and Blues Festival and the Father's Day Jazz Festival.

Roving comedians and a stiltwalker entertained the crowds.

It is said that there are 365 islands in Moreton Bay - one for every day of the year. Some of the "islands" are little more than sand atolls that are only visible at low tide.
Three are quite a few islands visible from the Wynnum Manly area, the larger Moreton and North Stradbroke Islands in the distance, and St Helena, and Green quite close to the shore, and over at the sound end of Waterloo Bay is King Island. King Island is attached to the mainland by a sand spit. At low tide it is a popular walk - one just has to remember to make the return journey before the tide comes in. Yachts need wind!

It was a perfect day - but not for yachties - they need to have their sails filled with wind to push them along. For us on the spectator boats it was a perfect day - no wind, smooth seas, no rocking of the boat!

The start of the race from Brisbane to Gladstone was delayed for almost an hour - not enough wind we were told. It gave us a good opportunity to look at the yachts up close.

When the wind did come in - it was just gentle - enough to flutter the flags, and off they went. This photo of the yacht Earthling, with calm water give some idea of the weather at the time.

Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race

On Good Friday, the first public holiday of the Easter Weekend, it is the start of the Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race. The main race goes from Sandgate to the north from Wynnum Manly - but it is from Manly that the multi-hull yachts leave.

I'd booked tickets on one of the spectator boats and duly lined up at 9 am along with many other people to go out and watch the race. It was a picture perfect day - blue sky, calm sea - no wind. No wind? What about the yachts?

The race was due to start at 11 am - and at 5 to 11 we heard the gun go off giving the 5 minute warning, followed by another. We on the spectator boat had no idea what was happening, as nothing happened at 11 am. The expected starter's gun did not go off, and the red flag indicating no race was still flying. It was almost another 50 minutes before the race started. We were told that it was because there was no wind - hardly a breath of air to fill the sails and push them on their journey.

If one was just to laze around on the bay in a boat, it was the perfect day to do so, but so frustrating for the yachties who wanted strong winds to fill their sails.

On one of the boats was a lone piper - yes, there was this guy standing on the boat playing the bagpipes. I must find out why - but it did amuse us.

Pelicans

There are quite a few pelicans around the area. They are a familiar sight flying - gliding across the sky. Often the are sitting with other sea birds on the waterfront - especially at low tide when quite a few of the birds congregate.

The best place to see them is at the mouth of Wynnum Creek. They spend a lot of time there, as there are many tasty morsels for them from the little Fish cafe, and this is where a lot of fishermen clean their catch and throw fish heads and bones into the creek. Good pickings for hungry pelicans.

The often can be found sitting atop a pole - just lazily watching the world go by and waiting for the next fishing boat to come back to share the catch.

Foreshore

Along the waterfront from Wynnum North to Lota is a pathway that takes you on a scenic walk or ride thought the most beautiful scenery in the area. With Moreton Bay, the boats, and islands in the back ground, the pathway is littered with cottowood trees and pine trees. Along the route are also quite a number of parks with picnic shelters, and other facilities to make life more comfortable for visitors.

Along the Esplanade are a wide selection of restaurants and cafe's too - along with several Boating Clubs with great facilities.

It's a walk done - all or in part - by hundreds of walkers and bicyle riders each day.

Blue sky day

Today is one of those special days - crisp morning air, blue skies, a gentle breeze fanning Moreton Bay. A good day for boating - our next door fishing boat left at 5 am to find what the ocean will give up this day.
The deep blue sea of Moreton Bay glitters in the sunlight, and the boaties soak it in. Just a magic day.
